Impressionism- Instead of showing life as it really was the painters tried to show their impression of a subject or a moment in time. this is of a guy in the water when the sun is setting.

Claude Monet, Soleil Levant, 1872

Realism- Tried to show life as it was, not as it should be. This is a picture of how life was with slaves and not how it should be with everyone equal.
Jean- Francois Millet. The Gleaners. 1857.

Romanticism- This movement reflected deep interest both in nature and in the thoughts and feelings of the individual. This picture shows romanticism because it is about one of the two categories, nature.
Thomas Cole: The Voyage of Life: Youth, 1842

The working conditions were not as good as you might have though. The life of a worker was shortened and the living conditions were not goo. the crime rate increased and diseases spread more often. A lot of people moved to the city which turned to over populated some areas. Workers would protest and go on strikes. People wanted better pay or shorter hours. Business and land owners tried to keep the workers quite because they did not want the word to spread to places and other people to join them and have that business go down.

Imperialism is the seizure of a country or territory by a stronger country. One motive the Europeans had to industrialize was that they wanted more resources to fuel their industrial production. A second motive was to get more land for more resources. A third motive would be that they wanted to improve their economics.

British was trying to industrialize as well. They wanted more resources to use and to sell or trade. Britain tried to take parts of Africa to get raw materials. Britain was also wanting to update there economy. Britain was also signing peace treaties with other countries.

Africa was also trying to industrialize. Africa had to try to fight the other countries who are trying to take all of there land. Africa had a lot of raw materials that people needed for them to use to industrialize. Africa was not really producing a lot more materials than all the other countries that are producing cotton and ect.

Addicted! the Opium War started because British merchants smuggled opium to china for non medical purposes.  12 million Chinese people were addicted.

A Reason Worth Fighting For. The Taiping Rebellion was started by a guy named Hong Xiuquan from Guangdong. The Taiping Rebellion was started because Hong and his recruit's wanted to build  a "Heavenly kingdom of great peace." In this kingdom all Chinese would share China's vast wealth and no one would live in poverty. Hong created a million man army, but even with all these people the rebellion has failed at the end because they had to fight off the Qing imperial troops, French, and the British. They also had to fight within themselves which led to there fate.

More Land and trade! China had signed the treaty of Nanjing which gave Britain the island of Hong Kong. After signing another treaty  U.S. and other foreign counties had gained Extraterritorial rights.

Widespread Frustrations. Poor peasants and workers did not like the special privileges granted to foreigners. They also did not like Chinese Christians, who had adopted foreign faith. These people were soon called Boxers.

Many ports opened. Matthew Perry took four ships to what is now Tokyo. The huge black ships powered by steam surprised the Japanese. The shogun came to realize that he had to receive Matthew Perry. Perry had brought the letter from the president of the U.S. to give to the shogun. Perry had delivered it with a threat, however. he would come back in a year with a larger fleet to receive Japan's reply. The reply was the Treaty of Kanagawa. This opened two ports for the U.S. to trade and receive goods. Later on several ports were open to other foreign countries.

War over Manchuria. Japan and Russia were the two major powers. Japan wanted to share Manchuria if Russia would stay out of Korea. Russia refused the deal and they went to war. Japan surprised attacked a fleet of anchored Russian ships which started it. Japan then got Russian out of Korea, and captured most of Russia's Pacific fleet.

The Catholic church had a huge influence on the people in Europe. People listened to what the church has told them over the years, and i think this is one of the major reasons why Enlightenment ideas were slow to influence the lives of most Europeans. An example would be when Galileo had said that the Earth was not the center of the universe and when he refused to say it was false he got arrested. Some people could not read so they had to go with what the church has told them.

Thomas Hobbes had a more negative view on human nature. John Locke had a positive view and thought that people should have life, liberty, and poverty. Thomas Hobbes thought that a monarch would be best to keep people in line. John Locke Thought that people are good enough to govern themselves. John Locke thought people could set up a Representative Government.
